FinSim

Preview Mode

Try the core loop using a demo account. When you’re ready, create your own account and start at age 14 with no assets.

What is FinSim?

FinSim is a text-based, shared-world personal finance simulator where you learn by doing.

  • Real-world decisions: Progress through a career, collect and rent real-estate, and build wealth over time.
  • FinSim Stock Exchange (FSE): Invest in companies, build a portfolio, and trade stocks in a simulated market.
  • Low-stakes learning: Experiment and improve without real-world risk. No pay-to-win mechanics or ads.
  • Education-first: Clarity, not complexity.

How preview mode works

Preview mode lets you interact with the game using a demo account before creating your own. Click around, try the demo buy button, and sign up when you’re ready.

This feature was added in v0.4.8 and will keep improving. Feedback is appreciated.

Where do we start?

New users start at age 14, enrolled in school, with no money, assets, job, or any other prospects. Every 48 minutes, one in-game day passes and your character ages accordingly.

It is currently July 1, 3012 FST. If you signed up now, your 14th birthday would be July 1, 3012, and in about 12 real days (48×365 minutes) a year will pass and you will be 15.

Important: FinSim uses a shared world clock. Time advances when a user interacts with the server and it detects that the in-game date should advance.
  • If the first login takes longer than expected, it’s usually day processing.
  • If you click the demo buy button and it takes longer than expected, it can also be day processing (otherwise it should be fast).
  • Day processing should typically finish within ~15 seconds. If it’s stuck longer, refresh.

Starting at 14 gives you time to learn, plan, and build wealth.

Part-time jobs

As a student, you’ll probably start building wealth through part-time work. Here are some part-time jobs available in FinSim:

  • Age-Assistance Specialist (Part-time) @ FinSim North Pension Trust
    16 hours/week
  • Broomsweeper (Part-time) @ MesaBank
    22 hours/week
  • Cash Hardener @ Hard Money Management
    29 hours/week
  • Corporate Presence Intern @ Ritchie Inc.
    20 hours/week
  • Rock Valuation Intern @ Rocks & Sox
    22 hours/week

The demo account already has a job and some cash, so we’ll skip job selection here.

Live view of the FinSim Stock Exchange (FSE)

Since the demo user already has $52281.72, you can skip straight to investing.

Rather than explaining everything in text, try a real demo market action: buy one share in FinSim National.

FinSim will expand to add more investment vehicles over time. For this pre-release, FSE is the focus, because everything else builds on a functioning market and price discovery.

So what happened when you clicked that button?
  • The demo account placed a market order for a single share of FinSim National (FN).
  • The market maker filled that order at the current ask price.
  • The transaction was recorded and updates the displayed market price.
  • The demo account’s cash decreases and the share is added to the portfolio.
  • At higher volume, market maker inventory adjustments move prices over time.

Live demo feed

Everything you do in FinSim is recorded in your action log. This is the last 25 entries in the demo account's log. If you clicked “Buy 1 share”, you should see it at the top.
